1. Fast start - Georgia scored on its second possession of the game. Then again on its third. Then again on its forth. Then again on its fifth. These are its possessions. INT,TD,TD,FG,TD. The scoring slowed down from there but with the defense only giving up ten points through three quarters it was more than enough. Tech was playing behind early on and never threated to take the lead after Georgia went up 14-3.
2. Win the third down battle on both sides of the ball - Result - Georgia was 4 of 10 on third down and Tech was 7 of 16 on third down. It was somewhat of a stalemate here but Georgia winning the turnover battle 2 to 1 and forcing more third downs help decide the game.
3. Touchdowns not field goals - Result - Georgia scored 4 touchdowns and attempted two field goals. Overall good but could have been better as they had a drive that started at the Tech 25 end up with a punt.
Prediction - 31-21 Georgia - Result - 31-17.
The most impressive stat of the day was holding Washington to 3 of 10 passing for 34 yards. Georgia did not give up a big passing play despite staying up tight against the run until the game was already decided and Tech had put in their backup quarterback. Tech still had 243 rushing yards but did on it 4.4 yards per carry versus their normal average of 5.75 yards per carry. A big difference from last year was the play of Jenkins at the nose position. He not only required Tech to double him but he often got into the back field to disrupt plays before they started. I can't wait to see what he will do with a full off season in Athens to improve even more.
I forget where I saw it mentioned so I can't take credit for this but I thought it was a good observation. They said that facing Tech a week before having to play LSU who uses Jefferson quite a bit on option plays will help Georgia be more prepared for everything LSU will throw at us. Obviously LSU uses it more as a change up compared to Tech but I do think that it will help the defense recognize and react to option plays quicker which could take away a few of the bigger plays from LSU. Every little thing we can get will be needed.
Our special teams have quietly gotten much better the last few weeks. They will need to continue that trend this weekend against LSU as they have some of the best in the business. I would say if special teams balance out for Georgia that will be advantage Georgia.

Keys to a Georgia Win - Tennessee review
1. Georgia OL versus Tennessee DL. Result - Well this was 50/50. Georgia gave Murray more time than he has had all season outside of the Coastal Carolina game. That is a huge improvement. On the other hand there were far fewer holes opened up in the running game. Some of that I think was by design of the UT defense in using extra men to stop the run and simply out numbering the blockers. Overall a good performance by the OL but still with lots of room to improve.
2. Get pressure on Bray. Result - This again was a 50/50 thing. Bray had all day in the first half with little to no pressure and he used that too his advantage in the first half moving the ball well but still only putting up 6 points. The second half Georgia got more pressure which led to more errant throws by Bray as well as a couple of intentional groundings late, one each for Bray and Simms. I think without his best pass rusher in Washington Grantham was happy to rely more on coverage and it worked out well overall.
3. Throw the Tennessee receivers timing off. Result - I think for the most part Georgia did this with one glaring exception, the tight end in the first half. Despite Tennessee's sucess to their backs and tight ends (13 of their 22 completions)they had little sucess down field to their wide receivers. Normally when a high percentage of passes are underneathe a quarterback will complete a high percentage of his passes but Georgia held the two Tennessee QB's to 22 of 39 (56%). Only three wide receivers had catches and only two of those had more than one catch. All of Tennessee's wide receivers combined to have less yards than Malcolm Mitchell has on his own. Considering the UT quarterbacks had time to throw the ball most of the game that means the coverage for Georgia was excellent.
4. Take advantage of mistakes. Result - Neither team had a big mistake that cost them, although watching the replay of Tennessee's non-fumble fumble shows the ball was clearly out. Georgia did take advantage of the good field position that the snap over Bray's head and the following punt gave them by scoring a TD to take the lead for good in the game. On the plus side for Georgia is for the first game outside of Coastal Carolina they did not "give" the other team any points. Amazing how good a defense that is playing well can look when they are not put in bad situations.
5. Big play on special teams - Result - There were no big plays by Georgia's special teams but they did hit both of their FG's and only had one negative play, the big punt return on 4th and 56 to go along with the 15 yards penalty. That is improvement and hopefully will lead to bigger things from this part of Georgia's game.
Prediction - 35 - 24 Georgia wins. Result - 20-12 Georgia.

Keys to a Georgia Win - Mississippi State review
1. Which offensive line overcomes the adversity they have faced? Result -For a half this question was easy to answer. Georgia's offensive line did not play as well the second half. They did have one clock eating drive in the 4th quarter to help eat up clock. Decent performanace but needs to improve in the second half after two second half swoons.
2. Make Relf beat you with his arm. Result - Georgia held State's rushing attack to 56 yards after they had been averaging 216 yards per game. Relf was forced to try to beat Georgia and while he started out pretty good he could not sustain it. Great job by the Georgia defense of taking away what State wanted to do.
3. No more freebies. Result - *sigh* Another week and another touchdown given up by the offense. This is becoming a really bad trend.
4. Make the routine plays. Result - Better but on offense there were still a couple of dropped passes and despite the impressive performance by the defense there were four passes the defense got their hands on that did not end up in interceptions. State's offense was not good enough to make Georgia pay for the missed interceptions but against a better team those could be costly. Another missed field goal by Walsh and a bad snap on field goal resulted in more missed points.
5. Finish drives. Result - I won't go into all the missed chances but this sums it up. Georgia's offense had two drives start inside the State 15 yard line. From those two drives Georgia had 2 fg attempts with one of them having a botched snap. When the defense gives you the ball already in the redzone you have to get touchdowns.
6. Offensive start to match the defense. Result - Offense got off to a good start with 14 first quarter points. Good start, not so great of finish.
Prediction. Final score 34-17 Result - 24-10 and it shouldn't have been that close.
Two weeks in a row Georgia has been on the verge of a dominating performance but mistakes in special teams and turnovers on offense have kept it from being that way. They are again learning to win and hopefully can build off the last two games. The Dawgs must continue to improve week to week if they want to keep winning. They have gotten away with the mistakes the last two weeks but eventually if they are not cleaned up it will cost them the way it did against South Carolina.

Carolina reviewing the game tape
Normally this late in the week I would be focused on the next opponent but given who Georgia plays this week I took another look back at the Carolina game. Here are a few of my observations.
1)Grantham called a hell of a game, possibly his best since he came to Georgia last year. The defense was responsible for giving up 17 points. Even on the drives where the defense gave up points Grantham had made calls that gave the defense a chance, he was not fooled by anything Spurrier called. On one touchdown Garcia made a great throw and Jeffery showed why he is considered one of the best in the nation. Smith was all over him but was out muscled for the ball. On the other drive the big play that led to the touchdown was a run by Lattimore, he had great blocking at the point of attack and the Georgia linemen allowed themselves to get turned opening up a huge hole for him to run through. Those things are going to happen occasionally against good teams. Georgia did the best job they have done under Grantham of being in the right defense and not allowing players to run wide open in the secondary.
2)There was a hold call blown on the South Carolina fake punt. Reuben Falougi was tackled by the center on the fake punt. It didn’t appear thebe the block that sprung the runner but a hold is a hold and one this blatant should have been called. If called it takes seven points off the board for Carolina and forces a punt.
3)King is not living up to being the number one receiver. He has 3 catches through two games. While no one expected him to be Green everyone did expect him to be the clear cut number one wide receiver. It is only two games but with him being the most experienced receiver the early games should have shown that difference more so than games later in the season. Hopefully his great catch on Georgia’s last drive of the game sparks him. With the way Bennett and Mitchell are coming along if the veterans Wooten, Brown and King can show up then Georgia can have a very explosive offense.
4)Murray is bi-polar. When he is at his best he is one of the best in the country. When he is off his game he cripples the offense. He has to get better at managing his bad stretches. If he can get to where his bad stretches are him playing average and keep the high end of his game the same then the offense can become the best it has been since 2007. It is ok to throw the ball away or to take a sack. Hopefully the emergence of Crowell and some of the younger wide receivers will help Murray realize he doesn’t have to carry the team alone.
5)Richt may have lost some fan support but he has not lost his team. Coaches can bounce back from losing fan support with a few nice winning streaks but players are a different story. Once you lose them there is little chance of the team bouncing back. Richt’s players play hard for him and are not going to quit. They had the chance after the fumble return to the five and the interception return for a touchdown by Carolina gave up 14 quick points. They had the chance after the fumble return for a touchdown in the 4th quarter. Both times Georgia answered with quick touchdowns to get back in the game. The players may have made mistakes that cost the team the game but they have a lot of resiliency in them and would not quit fighting for the win.
6)The only person on the field that can stop Crowell is himself. Once he learns how to work out a bit harder and to mentally prepare to play through fatigue he is going to be a star. Bobo has already stated that he will get Crowell the ball as often as the freshman can handle it. For the first time in years Georgia should have a balanced attack without Bobo having to force it artificially.
7)Richt is not just blowing smoke up the fans collective skirts when he says this team is going to be very good. The only question is will they get there fast enough to save his job.
